Providing A Well Rounded Eye Rejuvenation Treatment Plan
The first form of communication between people are usually through the visual eye contact with once another. Thus, eye rejuvenation has become one of the most sought after aesthetic procedure according to British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) in 2016 in the United Kingdom. In this week's newsletter we are going to explain some of the proper techniques and recommendations for aesthetic practitioner in producing the best quality of eye rejuvenation for their patient.
Common Eye Problems of Patients
The anatomy and physiology of the ageing upper face is well known and documented for many years. In the lower eye area, the tear trough depression due to a genetic predisposition associated with the tear trough ligament. However, the hollow or dark circle appearance is due to mid-cheek malar fat pad atrophy and the subsequent parting between the lower eye bag fat pad and the malar fat pad, which slides lower with gravity. The decreased elasticity of the overlying ageing skin also contributes to this hollow, as well as skeletal ageing. In the upper eyelid, the skin increasingly sags and droops due to a loss of elasticity in individuals with a genetic predisposition or due to extrinsic factors.
Tips:
The tear trough depression can often be treated with cross-linked HA dermal filler as it is reversible using hyaluronidase, giving patients and their practitioners reassurance. The cross-linking produces an astounding effect which last between 12-24 months or even longer.
The thickness of the filler has to be chosen correctly as it varies according to different patients according to the state of their condition.
Shallow dark circles and thin skin: Filler with a low G-prime is recommended for the rejuvenation
Patients with larger eye bags and significant volume loss: Filler with a high G-prime and volumes the upper cheek to help fill the tear troughs.
*On average 1ml filler per eye
As long as aesthetic practitioner knows the anatomy of the area well, they can avoid side effects such as bruising and vascular compromise. Sometimes bruising is an unavoidable side effect, although when managed properly, it should not adversely impact the lifestyle of the patient.
It is important to inject deep and in most cases, just above periosteum. Many techniques can be deployed, such as bolus technique, linear threading and the pyramid technique, in which a small amount of filler with low G-prime is deposited closer to the surface.
Lastly, massage of the treated area is crucial in the speed of recovery for the patient and they are advised of strict aftercare instructions to avoid side effects such as redness, bruising and oedema, which tends to last for up to a week. The massage should be very strong and pressured in nature, with a vibrating motion of the fingers necessary to literally break down any clumping of areas of persistence oedema. Patients are to avoid exercise and alcohol for 24 hours and should apply ice and arnica gel to treated area.
